What is chelating agent?
A chelating agent binds metal ions in solution so they cannot react. In cleaning chemistry it sequesters the calcium and magnesium in hard water, preventing the scale and soap-scum films that otherwise leave a chalky residue on parts and shorten bath life.

Hard water is a real problem in much of India, where mains supply commonly runs several hundred ppm of hardness. Without a chelant, calcium reacts with the cleaner's anionic components to form insoluble soaps that deposit on parts, tank walls and heaters.
Chelants wrap the metal ion in a molecular cage, keeping it soluble and unreactive. The bath stays clear, the heaters stay clean, and the parts come out without a film — and the surfactant system keeps its full cleaning capacity instead of losing part of it to hardness.
Chelants also help in descaling and rust removal, where they hold dissolved iron in solution so it cannot re-deposit on the surface being cleaned.
