What is rust preventive?
A rust preventive is a coating applied after cleaning to protect bare metal in storage and transit. Types range from water-based inhibitors giving weeks of indoor cover, through oil-based films for months, to hard-film and VCI systems for sea freight and long-term storage.

Selection is driven by three questions: how long the part must be protected, what environment it will sit in, and whether the film must be removed before the next operation. A part going to assembly tomorrow needs something very different from one going into a sea container.
Water-based inhibitors are the lightest option — easy to apply in the final rinse, easy to remove, typically good for days to a few weeks indoors. Oil-based films give months but must be degreased off later. Hard films survive shipping but need solvent removal.
The most common failure is not the product but the timing. A rust preventive applied over a damp or contaminated surface seals moisture against the metal and accelerates the corrosion it was bought to stop.
